The premium logic of the Austrian Working Hours Act (AZG) lives in the calculation core, not in an Excel post-processing step.

One workday, two truths
Payroll needs the real working time with the correct premiums. The office needs the hours per job. In between, many businesses have slips of paper, spreadsheets and follow-up questions.
Premiums calculated by hand
Whether hours count as extra hours (25%) or overtime (50%) is decided by law — but the calculation is often still done by hand, at month's end, under time pressure.
Requests by word of mouth
Leave requests and corrections travel by email or verbally, with no status, no approval step, and no audit trail.
Double entry

Real-world example: the 43-hour week
A part-time employee with 30 agreed weekly hours works 43 hours in a busy week. Who gets which premium? That's exactly the question stempeln.at answers continuously — not by hand at month's end.
stempeln.at calculates hours, not money: the breakdown goes into the payroll export as gross hours with premium categories — the money calculation deliberately stays with payroll accounting. Why that's an advantage is explained under "Clear commitments, not fine print".
Labor law in the calculation core, not in the fine print
The rules that Austrian payroll needs every day are built into the calculation core — as code with tests, not as a footnote in a manual.
Extra hours and overtime kept separate
hours above the agreement up to the 40-hour threshold are extra hours (25%); beyond that, and beyond the daily threshold, they're overtime (50%). Rates are configurable per person where the collective agreement provides for more.
Leave counted in hours, not days
for part-time work, this is the only clean way to calculate it. Five weeks of entitlement means: weekly hours × 5.
Public holidays and sick leave count as fulfilled
a public holiday on a scheduled workday doesn't consume leave, and sick leave doesn't create a deficit.
A break-time warning instead of a silent correction
if a logged day violates the mandatory rest-break rule (from 6 hours, § 11 AZG), the app shows a warning. It never silently changes recorded data.
Month-end close with a frozen state
locking a month freezes the payroll export state; later changes to master data no longer affect closed months. Every lock and every unlock is logged, with a reason, in a tamper-evident, chained audit history.
Three decisions that carry the product
PWA instead of app store.
Install straight from the browser to the home screen, one build for every device, works offline. No app-store review cycle, no time-clock hardware, no device lock-in.
Tenant separation enforced by the database.
Every query is scoped twice: in the application, and again via row-level security in the database system itself — backed by automated cross-tenant tests. All data stays in the EU; sick-note uploads (health data, GDPR Art. 9) only after explicit consent, stored encrypted, and visible only to admins.
Closed means closed.
A locked month is serialized against any booking at the database level — including paths a later code change wouldn't think of. Deletion in the legal sense means anonymization: the BAO (Austrian Federal Fiscal Code) requires seven years of retention, so time data stays intact while personal identifiers are removed.
Clear commitments, not fine print
Software that promises everything gets something wrong somewhere. stempeln.at is deliberately more precise than the market on three points — to protect every business that runs payroll on it.
Hours from us, money from the professionals. stempeln.at delivers gross hours with a clean premium breakdown — exactly what payroll accounting needs, via the exports for BMD, RZL and DATEV. An "approximate" net figure next to it would only cost trust: Austrian income tax and social security belong in payroll accounting, and that's exactly where stempeln.at hands them off cleanly.
Never silently calculates wrong. Averaging periods, flextime agreements and collective-agreement special rules are never assumed on request: without a documented basis, stempeln.at calculates conservatively with 8 hours per day and 40 per week — and actively flags the case for review instead of hiding an assumption. A four-day week up to 10 hours can be enabled, with a documented legal basis (§ 4 para. 8 AZG) and confirmation by the business — not by the employee themselves. That protects the business in every audit.
Built with platform knowledge. On iPhone, push notifications only exist from iOS 16.4 and only for installed apps, and background sync doesn't exist at all for web apps — we know these limits and built around them: offline entries are reliably synced the next time the app opens, instead of relying on a promise the platform can't keep.

What this says about how we work
stempeln.at is our own product — we live with the consequences of every architecture decision ourselves. Before every release, more than 4,000 automated tests run; no build goes live unless the entire test chain is green. On top of that, a purpose-built verification tool runs random operation sequences against an independent reference model and reports any deviation between the database and the calculation core.
We have the system independently audited on a recurring basis — calculation logic, permissions, concurrency — and every finding gets answered with a fix and a test in the code, not a note in a document. Backups run daily to separate EU infrastructure, restores are rehearsed regularly instead of just claimed, and dead-man alarms report when a background process silently stops.
